Astro Observatories Western Australia provides managed floor space for hosted telescopes across multiple purpose designed shared-space observatories. AOWA began with one large shared observatory in 2018 and has since expanded into multiple buildings, allowing customer equipment to be hosted in a mature remote astronomy environment that supports commercial customers, research programs and individual astronomers.
Our shared observatories are built for the realities of the Western Australian Wheatbelt, including hot summers, strong seasonal storms and remote operation without constant on-site attendance. Construction uses insulated panel cladding and concrete floors to provide excellent thermal performance, helping internal ambient temperatures remain significantly below outside conditions during periods of consecutive hot summer days.
Lightning protection, weather resilience and serviceability are considered as core parts of the observatory design rather than afterthoughts. Purpose designed lightning protection, robust construction, secure access control and practical maintenance access help protect hosted equipment and support reliable operation over the long term.
Telescopes can be installed on tripods or piers, with mains electricity, data connection options and layout considerations discussed for each customer. Telescope optical tube assemblies can extend above the observatory wall where appropriate, allowing for optimised horizons while keeping the installation practical and serviceable.
AOWA has operated shared-space observatory hosting since 2018. As at 2026 AOWA operates multiple shared-space observatories and dedicated client observatories, reflecting steady growth from the original large shared facility into a broader hosting site. Since day one AOWA has hosted multiple telescopes for multiple customers, continually refining its systems, procedures and customer support through years of real-world remote operation.
Founder and primary operator Roger Groom also brings extensive private observatory and automation experience. Combined with AOWA's commercial hosting history, this gives customers a service that understands both the technical detail of telescope operation and the importance of dependable long-term support.
Shared space observatories are for remote hosting only and access is strictly controlled. Provision is made for visits to install equipment, perform maintenance and decommission installations. Access at other times is by prior arrangement only, helping protect privacy, security and continuity for all hosted customers. If you require more regular access you may wish to consider your own observatory structure.
