Scroll to find out more about observatory hosting
Our property has large open field areas suitable for dedicated customer observatory structures. AOWA now supports several dedicated observatories onsite for varied customers from Australia and around the world, alongside its shared telescope hosting facilities.
Customers can work with AOWA to purpose design an observatory around their equipment and operating goals, or adapt an existing observatory design where that is the better path. The aim is to arrive at a practical, serviceable structure that suits the site, the customer's equipment, and the way the observatory will be operated over the long term.
Developing an observatory onsite is a journey from requirements through design, construction and operation. AOWA works with each customer to understand their telescope systems, enclosure needs, access expectations, power requirements, maintenance approach and future plans before moving toward construction.
This collaborative process helps ensure the final observatory is not simply placed on the site, but properly considered as part of a long-term remote astronomy installation.
Dark sky sites are always a balance between accessibility, darkness and availability of services such as data and electricity. AOWA's Central Wheatbelt site provides a practical balance for long-term remote astronomy, with dark skies, wide horizons and only slight light pollution visible low on the western horizon from Perth.
Located in the Central Wheatbelt of Western Australia approximately 150km from Perth, the site is accessible via highways and country roads. It is positioned away from regional town light pollution while remaining within a practical drive of services including fuel, supermarket, hardware and meals.
